Everton beats Liverpool in FA Cup

LONDON (AP)—Dan Gosling scored with 2 minutes left in extra time, putting Everton into the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 1-0 victory over short-handed Liverpool on Wednesday.
With a penalty-kick shootout looming to separate the cross-city rivals in their replay, the 19-year-old Gosling put in a deflected chip from Andy van der Meyde’s cross.
Liverpool was reduced to 10 men with 14 minutes remaining in regulation when Lucas Leiva was shown a second yellow card for tripping Joleon Lescott.
“We are really disappointed, to play for a long time with 10 men and to concede like that from a deflection at the end, you have to be disappointed,” Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez said. “The turning point of the game was the second yellow card for Lucas, I was not happy, but I do not want to say anything about the referee.”Everton will host Aston Villa in the round of 16. Led by American goalkeeper Brad Luzan, Villa beat Doncaster 3-1.
Blackburn defeated Sunderland 2-1 in extra time to set up a meeting with Coventry. Derby rallied to oust Nottingham Forest 3-2 and will next face Manchester United, which beat second-tier Derby in the League Cup semifinals.
Liverpool’s chances were damaged after 15 minutes when captain Steven Gerrard limped off with a suspected hamstring injury. The England midfielder will have a scan Thursday to see the extent of the injury.
Like Everton, Blackburn relied on substitute Benni McCarthy heading home with 2 minutes remaining to advance.
At Villa Park, Steve Sidwell got a gift for Villa’s opening goal in the 15th minute, knocking a loose ball into an empty net after Doncaster goalkeeper Neil Sullivan stopped a low drive by Craig Gardner. Villa led the rest of the way.
TURIN, Italy (AP)—Juventus overcame Napoli 4-3 in a penalty kick shootout after they couldn’t score in regulation or extra time of their Italian Cup quarterfinal.
Juventus will face Lazio in a two-leg semifinal on March 4 and 22. Inter Milan plays Sampdoria in the other semi.
Walter Gargano missed the crucial penalty kick for Napoli after Ezequiel Lavezzi and Matteo Contini also failed to score.
SEVILLE, Spain (AP)—Lautaro Acosta scored deep into injury time as Sevilla rallied for a 2-1 victory against Athletic Bilbao in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semifinals.
Acosta gathered a loose ball inside the penalty area and struck a left-footed shot under goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz 2 minutes into injury time.
Fernando Llorente opened the scoring for Athletic just before halftime when he headed David Lopez’s cross past out of position goalkeeper Andres Palop, who rushed out to meet the corner kick.
Sevilla evened in the 61st when Aldo Pedro Duscher volleyed a loose ball into the top of goal following a scramble.
Frederic Kanoute missed a chance for a late winner, beating Iraizoz with his 84th-minute penalty kick only to see the ball strike the post.
Athletic, a 23-time champion of the knockout competition, will need a victory in the return leg at San Mames on March 4 if it hopes to return to its first cup final for 25 years. Athletic hasn’t won a trophy since that successful league cup season.
PARIS (AP)—Second-division Vannes surprised Nice 4-3 in a penalty kick shootout to set up a French League Cup final against Bordeaux.
Vannes became the first club from the second division to reach the final since Gueugnon in 2000.
Bordeaux cruised past defending champion Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 to reach the final at Stade de France on March 29.
Vannes, which also beat Metz on penalties in the quarterfinals, held Nice to 1-1 over 90 minutes and extra time of their semifinal.
Seid Khiter put visiting Vannes ahead in the 60th minute. Tunisian striker Chaouki Ben Saada equalized for Nice in the 88th.
At Parc des Princes, David Bellion headed in Franck Jurietti’s cross for Bordeaux in the 17th minute, and it remained the only goal until late, and against the run of play.
After defending a corner kick, Bordeaux’s counterattack finished with Marc Planus’ cross lobbed in by Souleymane Diawara.
In the last minute, Geraldo Wendel scored to cap Bordeaux’s victory.
