LONDON (AP)—Steven Thompson scored twice and second-tier Burnley knocked off West Bromwich Albion 3-1 Tuesday in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
The Clarets, who play in the League Championship, knocked Premier League clubs Fulham, Chelsea and Arsenal out of the League Cup only to lose to Tottenham in the semifinals.
Now they have also beaten the last-place team in the Premier League to reach the last 16 of the more prestigious FA Cup, and will visit Arsenal or Cardiff, whose own replay scheduled for Tuesday was called off a day earlier because heavy snow made Emirates Stadium unplayable.
With his team last in the Premier League and desperate to avoid relegation, West Brom manager Tony Mowbray made six changes to his regular starting lineup.
Wade Elliott gave Burnley the lead with a 20-yard volley in the 45th minute. Thompson added the second in the 52nd from close range after Martin Patersen met a cross from Christian Kalvenes only for a defender to block his header.
Gianni Zuiverloon replied for the Baggies with an angled shot in the 60th but Thompson scored the third from close range after Robbie Blake opened up the West Brom defense.
In the race to gain promotion to the Premiership, Championship leader Wolves was held 3-3 at home by Norwich. The result means that although they were five points ahead, second-place Reading has a game in hand.
